Events planned at Nokomis Library

Nokomis Library, 5100 S 34th Ave., has the following events planned in the coming month:

-- Registration (required) begins Sept. 3 for a Wed., Oct. 1 (10am) presentation of “World War I: Life on the Home Front.” Registration required, begins Sep 3. Register online or call 612-543-6800. This year marks the 100th anniversary of the start of World War I. Local historian Iric Nathanson will talk about life in Minnesota as the war raged on in Europe. Nathanson is the author of "Modern Times in the Big City – Minneapolis in 1914," Hennepin History Magazine.

--MacPhail Center for Music: Sing, Play, Learn! Is set for Saturdays, Sept. 6–27, 10:30–11:15am. Register online or call 612-543-6800. For children ages 1-6. Hands-on musical play activities led by early childhood music specialists will let your family experience music’s impact on learning and reading readiness. Together you will sing, rhyme, read, move and create!

--Homework Help starts up again Mon., Sat. 8 from 3:30-7:30pm, and continues Thurs., Sept. 11, also at 3:30-7:30pm. Homework Help continues through Nov. 20 (not available Oct. 13 or Oct. 16). Free in-person tutoring for K-12 students. No advance sign-up needed.

-- Friends of the Nokomis Library Adult Book Club will meet on Thur., Sept. 25, 6:30pm to discuss “And The Mountains Echoed” by Khaled Hosseini.
--55+ Book Club: Join a discussion of new and interesting titles. Bring along your recommendations for future meetings. Lending copies may be picked up at the information desk prior to meeting. On Wed., Sept. 3, 3pm, they will discuss “Let the Great World Spin” by Colum McCann, and on Wed., Oct. 1, 3pm, they will discuss “The House I Loved” by Tatiana de Rosnay.
-- Crafty Minnesota: Not Just Knots is planned for Sat., Sept. 13, 3–5pm. Registration required, and register online or call 612-543-6800. For adults. Plant hangers, owl art and knotty jewelry are all back and better than ever. Learn a simple collection of knots used to make unique jewelry and funky accessories. Materials provided. 
--Diabetes Support Group meets Friday, Sept. 5, 1–3pm. Are you a person with diabetes or pre-diabetes? Share experiences with others living with diabetes and get tips and advice from a health care professional on blood sugar management, diet and exercise. Please call Nokomis Healthy Seniors, 612-729-5499, to make arrangements for free transportation to the program.

--Fearless and Friendly Knitting Group will meet Wed., Sept. 10 and Sept. 24 from 10am-noon. This meeting is for men and women at all skill levels. Make new friends while creating your own handmade masterpieces! Drop in, or stay the whole time. Learn how to knit or practice new techniques. Bring your own needles and yarn, please. Other needlecrafts welcome! 
-- Mystery/Thriller Adult Book Club meets Mon., Sept. 8, 6:30p.m. Join the discussion of new and interesting mystery and thriller titles. Bring along your recommendations for future meetings. Lending copies may be picked up at the information desk prior to meeting. In September they will discuss “Stormbreaker” by Anthony Horowitz and on Oct. 13 they will discuss “Arne Dahl” by Misterioso.
--“Paws to Read With an Animal” meets Sat., Sept. 20, 3-5pm. This event is for families. Volunteers will help put young readers at ease so they can cuddle up with a certified therapy animal and practice reading aloud. Most libraries host dogs and you can call ahead to see if other animals will be visiting. 
-- "Game On! Gaming Thurs." takes place on every Thursday through Nov. 20, 4:30-6pm. This event is for teens. Play Playstation 4 or Xbox 360 at the library!
--The Graphic Novel Adult Book Club meets Thur., Sept. 11, 6:30pm. Lending copies for this month’s selection may be picked up at the information desk prior to meeting. In September they will be discussing “Black Hole” by Charles Burns, and in October they will discuss “Preacher: Book One and Two” by Garth Ennis. 
--The Sci-Fi Adult Book Club meets the first Thursday of each month (Sept. 4) at 6:30pm. In September they will discuss “Flash Point” by Nancy Kress, and on Oct. 2 they will discuss “Cat’s Cradle” by Kurt Vonnegut. Join a discussion of new and interesting sci-fi titles. Bring along your recommendations for future meetings. Lending copies for this month’s selection may be picked up at the information desk prior to meeting.
--Family Storytime for children of all ages, and their parents, meets Fri., Sept. 12, 19, and 26, at 10:30am and is for children of all ages and their parent or caregiver. Talk, sing, read, write and play together in a format appropriate for young children. Share books, stories, rhymes, music and movement.

--Baby Storytime, for children from birth to 24 months (and their parent or caregiver) meets every Saturday through Nov. 18 (except Oct. 21) at 9:30am.
--LEGO Lab meets Sat., Sept. 6, from 2-4pm. This event is for families. Calling all future engineers and architects! We've got the bricks, but we need you to bring your imagination. No experience necessary. We'll have LEGOS and DUPLOS®, so all ages are welcome.
