Events planned at Nokomis Library

Nokomis Library, 5100 S 34th Ave., has the following events planned in the coming month:

—Opera Viva! Opera 101 will be held Thur., Oct. 16, 6:30pm. Registration required. Register online or call 612-543-6800. No experience necessary! Minnesota Opera teaching artists will present a brief history of opera and a special 2015-16 season preview, with live musical examples.

— Register (required) now for a Wed., Oct. 1 (10am) presentation of “World War I: Life on the Home Front.” Registration required and can be done online or call 612-543-6800. This year marks the 100th anniversary of the start of World War I. Local historian Iric Nathanson will talk about life in Minnesota as the war raged on in Europe. Nathanson is the author of “Modern Times in the Big City – Minneapolis in 1914,” Hennepin History Magazine.

—Homework Help on Mondays and Thursdays from 3:30-7:30pm, and continues through Nov. 20 (not available Oct. 13 or Oct. 16). Free in-person tutoring for K-12 students. No advance sign-up needed.

— Friends of the Nokomis Library Adult Book Club will meet on Thur., Oct. 23, 6:30pm.

—55+ Book Club: On Wed., Oct. 1, 3pm, they will discuss “The House I Loved” by Tatiana de Rosnay.

—Game On for Kids will take place on Thur., Oct. 2, 4:30-6pm. This event is for families; collectible card-playing! There will be Pokemon and Magic the Gathering cards, and you can bring your own, too.

— Crafty Minnesota: Needle Felting is planned for Sat., Oct. 11, 3–5pm. Registration required, and register online or call 612-543-6800. For adults. Plant hangers, owl art and knotty jewelry are all back and better than ever. Learn a simple collection of knots used to make unique jewelry and funky accessories. Materials provided.

—Diabetes Support Group meets Friday, Oct. 3, 1–3pm. Are you a person with diabetes or pre-diabetes? Share experiences with others living with diabetes and get tips and advice from a health care professional on blood sugar management, diet and exercise. Please call Nokomis Healthy Seniors, 612-729-5499, to make arrangements for free transportation to the program.

—Fearless and Friendly Knitting Group will meet Wed., Oct. 8 and Oct. 22 from 10am-noon. This meeting is for men and women at all skill levels. Make new friends while creating your own handmade masterpieces! Drop in, or stay the whole time. Learn how to knit or practice new techniques. Bring your own needles and yarn, please. Other needlecrafts welcome!

—The Nokomis Library Writing Group will meet Mon., Oct. 6, 6:30pm. Join fellow writers for encouragement, feedback, and to help each other take writing to the next level. Bring works in progress, paper and pen. You will explore different ways to think about writing.

— Mystery/Thriller Adult Book Club meets Mon., Oct. 13, 6:30p.m. In October they will discuss “Arne Dahl” by Misterioso.

—“Paws to Read With an Animal” meets Sat., Oct. 18, 2:30-4:30pm. This event is for families.

— “Game On! Gaming Thurs.” takes place on every Thursday through Nov. 20, 4:30-6pm. This event is for teens. Play PlayStation 4 or Xbox 360 at the library!

—The Graphic Novel Adult Book Club meets Thur., Oct. 9, 6:30pm. In October they will discuss “Preacher: Book One and Two” by Garth Ennis.

—The Sci-Fi Adult Book Club meets the first Thursday of each month (Oct. 2) at 6:30pm. On Oct. 2 they will discuss “Cat’s Cradle” by Kurt Vonnegut.

—Family Storytime for children of all ages, and their parents, meets Fri., Sept. 26, and Oct. 3, 10 and 17, at 10:30am and is for children of all ages and their parent or caregiver. Talk, sing, read, write and play together in a format appropriate for young children. Share books, stories, rhymes, music and movement.

—Baby Storytime, for children from birth to 24 months (and their parent or caregiver) meets every Saturday through Nov. 22 (except Oct. 21) at 9:30am.

—LEGO Lab meets Sat., Oct. 4, from 2-4pm. This event is for families. We’ve got the bricks, but we need you to bring your imagination. No experience necessary. We’ll have LEGOS and DUPLOS®, so all ages are welcome.

—Mark your calendars for the Used Book Sale, Sat., Oct. 25, 9am-3pm. Bargain hunters and book lovers take note: the Friends of the Library will hold a sale of hundreds of adult and children’s fiction and nonfiction books in hardcover and paperback.

Events scheduled at East Lake Library

East Lake Library, 2727 E. Lake St., has numerous scheduled events in the next month:

—“First Pages for Adults: Writing for Magazine Publications” is scheduled for Sun., Oct. 19, 3-4:30pm. Register (required) online or by calling 612-543-8425. Have you always had a secret desire to see your name in a magazine? Do you have a knack for writing, but just don’t know how to get published? Learn tips that will get you on your way to writing for magazines.

—A Used Book Sale is planned for Sat., Oct. 11, 9am-4pm and Sun., Oct. 12, noon-3pm. The Library will hold a sale of hundreds of adult and children’s fiction and nonfiction books in hardcover and paperback. Most books are withdrawn from the Hennepin County Library system or donated by the public. Funds raised will benefit the library.

Book donations are being accepted at the library. Adult, teen and children’s books, CDs and DVDs in good condition.

—Local author Alison McGhee will give a talk on Mon., Oct. 13, 6:30-8pm. Register (required) online or by calling 612-543-8425. McGhee writes for all ages and in all forms, including poetry, stories, novels, picture books and essays.

—“Art for Life: Silk Scarf, Banner or Hoop Painting” is planned for Fri., Oct. 17, 10:30am-noon. For adults 55+. Registration (required) online or by calling 612-543-8425. Learn a variety of methods for painting on silk. Experiment with a new tie-dye technique and batik-painting. Materials provided.

—Homework Help is available every Monday, Tuesday, and Thursday from 3:30-7:30pm, and continues through Nov. 20. Free in-person tutoring for K-12 students.

—Senior Surf Day is planned on Fri., Oct. 24, 9:30–11:30am. Registration is required. Register online or call 612-543-8425. Learn about computer basics, how to navigate and search the Internet and how to access websites of interest to seniors. Get hands-on computer experience with help from representatives of the Senior LinkAge Line.®

—The Adult Book Club will meet Fri., Oct. 10, 10:30-11:30am. They will discuss “Mornings on Horseback” by David McCullough.

—Family Storytime is held on Fridays through Nov. 21, 10:15-11:15am. This event is for children of all ages.

—Baby Storytime is scheduled on Fridays through Nov. 21, at 11:15am. This event is for children from birth to 24 months and their parent or caregiver.

— Conversation Circles will Sundays through Nov. 30, 1-3pm. Non-native English speakers can practice their English and make new friends in an informal, volunteer-led setting, and learn about the library, too. — Job Search Assistance is planned for every Tuesday from 3-5pm.

—Childcare Group Storytime, Wed., Oct. 1, 10:30am. Talk, sing, read, write and play together in a format appropriate for the children in your care.

—Teen Anime Club (for teens) meets Thur., Oct. 2, at 6-7:30pm. Watch anime, discuss manga and share artwork. Something different every time!

—“Make This: Nontraditional Comic Arts” is planned for Thur., Oct. 2, 6-8pm. Register (required) online or call 612-543-8425. For grades 7-12. Think comics are only created with pens and India ink? Think again. Explore the range of media used to create contemporary comics including scratchboard, photocopies, collage and printmaking, and more traditional materials. No previous comic arts experience necessary.

Events slated at Roosevelt Library

Roosevelt Library, 4026 28th Ave. S., will sponsor a number of events in the coming month:

—There will be a Used Book Sale on Sat., Oct. 18, 10am-3pm. The Friends of the Library will hold a sale of hundreds of adult and children’s fiction and nonfiction books in hardcover and paperback. Most books are withdrawn from the Hennepin County Library system or donated by the public. Funds raised will benefit the library.

—K-12 Homework help will be available every Tuesday through October, from 3:30-7:30pm. Free in-person tutoring for K-12 students. No advance sign-up needed.

—Baby Storytime will be on Saturdays through Oct. 11, at 9:30am. For children from birth to 24 months and their parent or caregiver. Talk, sing, read, write and play together in a format designed especially for babies. Share books, stories, rhymes, music and movement.

—There will be a “Library Lab for Kids: Art” on Sat., Oct. 4, 2-4pm. This event is form families and will focus on an art project (materials provided).

—The Mystery/Thriller Adult Book Club meets on Sat., Oct. 4, 1pm.

—”Paws to Read with an Animal” will take place Sat., Oct. 11, 3-5pm. This event is for families. Volunteers will help put young readers at ease so they can cuddle up with a certified therapy animal and practice reading aloud. Most libraries host dogs and you can call ahead to see if other animals will be visiting.

—Family Storytime meets Tuesdays through October at 6:30pm. For children of all ages and their parent or caregiver. Talk, sing, read, write and play together in a format appropriate for young children. Share books, stories, rhymes, music and movement.
