Civic Buzz: The Charter Amendments

This fall's Civic Buzz season will begin with a focus on two of the charter amendment proposals Minneapolis voters will see on their ballots. Improving governance in Minneapolis has been a decades-long goal of LWVMpls, which is supporting the Government Structure: Executive Mayor-Legislative Council amendment.

TOPIC: Charter Amendments: Government Structure: Executive Mayor-Legislative Council proposal put forward by the Minneapolis Charter Commission
PRESENTERS: LWVMpls members Patricia Kovel-Jarboe & Catherine Shreves
DATE: RESCHEDULED from Sept 7 to Sept. 30
TIME: 7:00 PM
LOCATION: via Zoom

TOPIC: Charter Amendments: Yes 4 Minneapolis proposal and how it aligns (or does not align) with LWVMpls positions
PRESENTERS: Reimagining Public Safety Committee co-chairs Jane Lansing & Jennifer Wilson
DATE: Thursday, September 23
TIME: 7:00 PM
LOCATION: via zoom webinar. Watch for link in a future Update or on social media.

Presentation will feature the Committee's study results and how the charter amendment proposed by Yes 4 Minneapolis aligns (or does not align) with LWVMpls positions. This proposed amendment would establish a new public safety department that would not be under the sole control of the Mayor, would be run by a Commissioner of Public Safety, would include police officers if necessary, and would remove the Police Department and its required funding from the Charter.
