When will fencing around former 3rd Precinct site be removed?

Maybe in a week, says council member Chowdhury

It's been almost five years since the fencing, jersey barriers, and barbed wire around the former 3rd Precinct building at 3000 Minnehaha has blocked the sidewalk and looked blighted. Six months ago, a city council resolution called for the removal in three months. On April 17, city operations officer Margaret Andersen Kelliher stated it would be done in one week.

From Council member Aurin Chowdhury's e-newsletter on April 17:

Since I was elected I have been advocating that the City administration make it a priority to addressed the blighted and dilapidated conditions of the Old 3rd Precinct at 3000 Minnehaha.

Today, I voted in favor of a contract with an Architectural Firm to do work on the future Democracy Center at 3000 Minnehaha-- and brought up the fact that the blight has not been addressed and that neighbors are deeply concerned (you can watch my comments here). On October 17, I co-authored a resolution that called for the immediate action to clean up, remediation, an beautification of 3000 Minnehaha site including but not limited to the removal of fencing, jersey barriers, barbed wire, and all other exterior blight. Through our advocacy, we were able to see the removal of barbed wire and a commitment that the burnt vestibule be removed in three months (you can watch my comments here). It has now been six months, and I called the question when that would happen- our COO Margaret Andersen Kelliher messaged me and shared to the committee that it would happen in one weeks time. I am grateful and I hope that this will in fact happen. An empty building, does not need to be a blighted building. It is unacceptable that it has been left in this state for as long as it has been and I have continued to push the administration to take care of it.

There will be future contracts to come before us on the Democracy Center and if all goes to plan the construction will take place in 2026 according to the City Administration.
