Kevin Brown (above left) of SmartSet, a printing company in Seward, opened an ICE Resistance Resource Center to provide information, copies of judicial versus administrative warrants, posters and more for businesses and residents. He's on the board of the Seward Civic and Commerce Association.
On Jan. 13, the Longfellow Businesses Association provided a virtual training on Workplace ICE Protocols. Look on the Messenger website for more details from that session. Gina Lemon of Vivid Joy Human Resources emphasized the importance of knowing rights and responsibilities, proactive measures for compliance, and legal protections. She shared a standard ICE protocol template. "So while this is a protocol, and typical of what should happen should ICE show up at your location, I have been seeing very aggressive behavior from ICE," said Lemon. She added, "There is nothing normal about what we're going through right now." She stressed that any location in a business where the public can go, ICE can also go. However, they need a judicial warrant naming a specific person to enter private areas, such as breakrooms.
