“Immigrants are welcome here” shout members of the crowd gathered near the site at Portland and 34th where 37-year-old Renee Nicole Good was shot and killed by ICE a few hours earlier. After law enforcement cleared out, part of the crowd walked two miles to Minneapolis City Hall. Others placed white roses near the area where she died. The killing by ICE occurred about 7 blocks from where George Floyd was killed.
When community members descended on the site in protest, ICE responded by firing pepperballs and pepperspray on those gathered. This is in the first days of Trump’s massive surge of 2000 federal agents to the Twin Cities. Observers have seen ICE grabbing random people out of their cars, at busstops, and at least one parent dropping their kids at school.
“We won’t be silent while ICE terrorizes our neighbors,” said Mira Altobell-Resendez, an organizer with MN Immigrant Rights Action Committee (MIRAC). “Their violence will not deter us from defending our communities.”
During a press conference on Jan. 7, Mayor Frey said noted that DHS is “trying to spin this as an action of self defense. Having seen the video myself, I wanna tell everybody directly, that is bulls***.” He said that the video footage does not appear to show that a vehicle was being weaponized against the ICE officer.
“I do have a message for our community for our city and I do have a message for ICE. To ICE, get the f*** out of Minneapolis. We do not want you here. Your stated reason for being in this city is to create some kind of safety and you are doing exactly the opposite. People are being hurt. Families are being ripped apart. Longterm Minneapolis residents that have contributed so greatly to our city, to our culture, to our economy are being terrorized and now, somebody is dead,” said Frey.

STATEMENTS RELEASED:
The Minnesota Latino Leadership Alliance (MiLLA):
strongly condemns the oppressive presence of federal immigration enforcement in Minnesota. This violent escalation resulted today in the shooting and killing of Renne Nicole Good by an ICE agent in Minneapolis.
Today’s events were completely predictable and avoidable. ICE has been tearing apart families, terrorizing neighborhoods, and paving a path of fear and destruction. The Latino community has warned for months that ICE’s presence in our communities would only bring violence, and today’s shooting is the unfortunate outcome of that reality.
MiLLA stands in full solidarity with our community during this fear-filled day. Our member organizations will continue to do the work they do serving Latinos across Minnesota. MiLLA calls for the immediate exit of all federal immigration enforcement in Minnesota and urges state and local governments to step up to support and protect all Minnesota residents, regardless of immigration status. ICE has been terrorizing all of Minnesota’s communities – not only Latinos. They have stoked fear into Minnesota’s Latino, Hmong, and Somali communities, and continue to drive division across all of Minnesota. ICE must leave Minnesota now.
Ward 2 Council Member Robin Wonsley:
This morning, federal agents shot and killed a Minneapolis resident, 37-year old mother Renee Good. My heart breaks for Renee Good’s family and loved ones, who will have to forever live with the pain caused by the Trump Administration's reckless and deadly actions.
Community members on the ground from the start have said that ICE’s constant escalation would lead to devastating outcomes like this.
ICE needs to leave Minneapolis immediately.
The Mayor and City Council have put forward a unified call for the Trump administration to withdraw all federal agents immediately. Federal immigration enforcement is causing chaos in our city and making our community less safe.
Moments after murdering Renee, ICE continued their operations of kidnapping immigrant neighbors across the city. There can be no more illusion that ICE is targeting “bad guys” – nobody is safe when ICE is here.
The agent who killed Renee needs to be arrested, with an independent investigation.
COPAL:
is deeply alarmed and heartbroken by the rapidly intensifying violence perpetrated by federal immigration agents in the Twin Cities, which resulted in the preventable loss of life of a community member today during an HSI investigation. Video footage and eyewitness accounts confirm that Renee Nicole Good was acting peacefully and only drove away after being shot at by agents, ultimately crashing into a light post and parked vehicles. This tragic loss occurred amid a broader pattern of aggressive federal enforcement, including the use of chemical irritants and rubber bullets, endangering both community members and Constitutional Observers.
This act represents an unacceptable and dangerous abuse of power.
ICE’s actions continue to endanger lives and terrorize communities. This devastating incident underscores what our communities have been saying for years: ICE activity does not make our neighborhoods safer — it puts everyone at risk.
COPAL calls on Minnesota’s elected officials to:
• Demand an immediate injunction against ICE activities in Minnesota
• Launch a full investigation into the violence against Renee Nicole Good
• Pass state and local policies that hold ICE and HSI to the same standards expected of all law enforcement: transparency, accountability, and due process
We stand firmly and unapologetically in solidarity with brave community members who put themselves at risk to peacefully uphold civil rights. Violence and intimidation will not deter our movement. We will continue to organize, document abuses, and demand an end to enforcement practices rooted in fear, force, and harm. Our communities deserve safety, dignity, and justice.
Today’s violence in the Twin Cities represents a tragic and unacceptable loss of life amid an escalating climate of fear and attacks impacting our community. What we witnessed today is an affront to what YWCA Minneapolis stands for, and we demand accountability.
YWCA Minneapolis:
At YWCA Minneapolis, our mission is clear: eliminating racism, empowering women and girls and ensuring peace, justice, freedom and dignity for all. This work calls us to confront violence, affirm the value of every life and stand with communities disproportionately affected by fear and loss. We remain grounded in equity, compassion and the belief that safety and dignity are human rights.
We hold close those who are grieving, those who are fearful and those who feel especially vulnerable right now. We also affirm what we know to be true: that our strength as a community lies in how we care for one another, how we honor human dignity and how firmly we reject violence and dehumanization.
YWCA Minneapolis remains committed to showing up with clarity, compassion and courage — standing with our community in this moment and beyond.
Ward 11 Council Member Jamison Whiting:
This is not how I hopes to first address you, but actions by this heartless Federal Administration today demand immediate and unwavering condemnation.
This morning, Federal ICE agents ended the life of one of our neighbors, in our City.
To the family and friends of the victim, we are so deeply sorry. Your loss has left Minneapolis heartbroken and horrified. We will do everything possible to ensure justice.
This kind of violence should never happen – period. The Minneapolis City Council and Mayor Frey are united in calling for ICE to leave our City immediately. We stand in full support of the immigrants, refugees, peaceful protestors, and all of our neighbors who make this City the place we call home. We implore the Federal Administration to conclude their destructive deployment, and to actually prioritize public safety and human decency, by immediately withdrawing ICE from Minneapolis.
To our neighbors, today is a moment to further prove the character of Minneapolis. Looking out for each other is what we do, and I encourage each and every Ward 11 resident to consider how we will peacefully step up in the coming days. We must overwhelm violence with an equally strong display of unity and love.
• If you or someone you know is in need of support, whether legal guidance, crisis assistance, and information on your rights, or want to help and don’t know how, you can find a list of City resources below and additional resources here.
• If you would like to join neighbors in mourning tonight, there will be a vigil at the corner of East 34th Street and Portland Ave S right now (5pm); I, along with many of my Council colleagues, will be there in solidarity and would love to see you.
Ward 9 Council member Jason Chavez:
My thoughts right now are with the loved ones of Renee who was murdered by ICE on 34th and Portland. The agent who murdered our neighbor must be arrested. Those who were involved in murder must be arrested. ICE must leave our city, and ICE must be abolished.
My thoughts are also with our immigrant neighbors, who are being kidnapped and seeing their families torn apart by Trump’s foot soldiers. And my thoughts are with every brave, committed resident in the streets observing the activities of federal agents running riot across our city.
Observing the federal government’s actions at 34th and Portland is not a crime, and even if it were, it would not be punishable by death. The deceased should be with us today, but because these masked agents believe they are above the law, they were murdered for exercising their rights.
The residents putting their personal safety on the line to observe ICE agents and their activities are keeping us safe. They’re documenting the government’s criminal activities, driving our friends and family to work or school, and they’re providing mutual aid. In this awful, dark time for our immigrant neighbors, these legal observers are providing light. I want to express my gratitude to every single resident who is stepping up. We will still need your help.
Ward 7 Council Member Elizabeth Shaffer:
On just the third day of my term, we are facing another unspeakable community tragedy. Earlier this morning, I was attending my second day of strategic planning with the new city council and mayor when we received word that a member of the public had been shot by a federal officer during an immigration enforcement action in the area of 34th and Portland, in South Minneapolis. We have since learned that the victim died in the shooting, and the area has now been cordoned off as a potential crime scene. Investigation is being led by both the FBI and the state Bureau of Criminal Apprehension.
While many important facts are still being gathered and verified, what we do know is that the presence of federal immigration enforcement agents in Minneapolis is creating confusion and is making our community less safe. I pray for the victim, I pray for justice and accountability, and I stand with our immigrant and refugee communities during this time of incredible stress.
I have no doubt that many of you will wish to make your voices heard. I do too, and will be attending the vigil onsite this evening at 5:00 p.m. All I ask is that we show the world a unified Minneapolis by demonstrating peacefully. Any violent behavior will simply feed the false narrative already being put forward about this incident. We need to meet hate and division with uncompromising love.
Lastly, it’s important that we respond only to accurate, verifiable facts as we seek clarity and justice. Please check City of Minneapolis social media accounts for up-to-date information about how the City is responding to this situation by visiting our website.
Ward 13 Council Member Linea Palmisano:
This morning, federal ICE agents in Minneapolis shot and killed a 37-year-old woman. According to MPD Chief O’Hara, this woman was not believed to be the target of any enforcement activity.
The area of 34th and Portland is considered a crime scene. Minneapolis Police officers immediately secured the area and assisted in preserving evidence. The scene has been turned over to the Federal Bureau of Investigation in partnership with our local Minnesota Bureau of Criminal Apprehension (BCA).
This is the devastating cost of the chaos of the lawlessness and injustice perpetuated by federal ICE agents in our city.
You can watch the press conference with Mayor Frey, Chief O’Hara, and Hennepin County Sheriff Witt here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QABt2PLIG14. Alongside these leaders, I am calling for accountability from ICE and their immediate departure from Minneapolis and extending my deepest condolences to the victim’s family and loved ones.
Minneapolis will do right by immigrants and together, we will do right by our city. Residents will continue to show up for our immigrant neighbors, to wrap their arms around them in solidarity and defense of their rights. As leaders we will continue to demand justice and accountability, creating calm amid the chaos and ensuring the subsequent investigation is transparent. We will show them the best of Minneapolis.
Minneapolis House Delegation:
We are devastated and angry that today, ICE killed a Minnesotan in the heart of our city. Tonight, a Minnesotan will not be with their family. Our deepest condolences go out to the victim and their family during this dark moment in our country’s history.
This killing comes after months of the federal government unleashing chaos and terror in our neighborhoods. ICE has kidnapped residents, taking away beloved members of our community. Now, their efforts to terrorize our community have resulted in the tragic loss of life.
As members of the Minneapolis Delegation, we are demanding that ICE leave our city and face accountability for their unlawful, violent, and oppressive actions. At this time, we are asking our community to stay safe, to not buy the propaganda from Homeland Security, and look out for one another.
In the coming days, we will do everything we can to protect each other from this hostile federal government.
The Minneapolis Delegation for the 2025-2026 biennium in the House includes Rep. Michael Howard (51A), Rep. Fue Lee (59A), Rep. Esther Agbaje (59B), Rep. Sydney Jordan (60A), Rep. Mohamud Noor (60B), Rep. Katie Jones (61A), Rep. Jamie Long (61B), Rep. Aisha Gomez (62A), Rep. Anquam Mahamoud (62B), Rep. Samantha Sencer-Mura (63A), and Rep. Emma Greenman (63B).
Minneapolis Senate Delegation:
We are horrified by the news that an ICE Agent has shot and killed a person in Minneapolis today. We share our deepest condolences to the victim and her family, and the entire community impacted by this violence.
One thing is clear: ICE must be held accountable for their actions. Federal law enforcement does not have free reign to inflict harm and pain on our community. We call on ICE to leave our city and state now.
Our priority remains protecting lives, ensuring that heightened tensions do not lead to further violence, and seeing that a full and truthful investigation is performed with state involvement. We urge our neighbors to avoid the area for the safety of all involved.
The Minneapolis Delegation to the State Senate includes: Senate President Bobby Joe Champion (DFL – SD59), Senators Scott Dibble (DFL – SD61), Doron Clark (DFL – SD60), Omar Fateh (DFL – SD62), and Zaynab Mohamed (DFL – SD63), and Senator Melissa H. Wiklund (DFL – SD51).
Congresswoman Betty McCollum:
For weeks, Donald Trump has directed ICE and DHS agents to racially profile and arrest Minnesotans in their homes, their workplaces, and on our streets. We now have over 2,000 federal immigration agents in our community. Trump’s reckless and dangerous immigration policies do nothing to make us safer. What they are doing is sowing chaos, division, and distrust not only in Minnesota, but across the nation. Today in Minneapolis, these actions resulted in a masked federal agent fatally shooting a woman in the head. My heart is with the woman’s family and loved ones, and everyone who witnessed this brutal killing.
ICE must immediately cease and desist their actions in Minnesota to allow state and local law enforcement officials to restore order, prevent further violence, and conduct a full, independent, and transparent investigation into ICE’s actions and conduct which caused this horrific shooting.
Minnesotans are justified in their anger. As Minnesotans, we demand accountability and justice. We have a fundamental right to express our first amendment freedoms through peaceful protest. We must not fall into Trump’s trap of division and violence. We can show the world the best of Minnesota values – our compassion, our respect for the dignity of each of our neighbors, and our belief in justice for all.
Minnesota AFL-CIO:
Minnesota’s Labor Movement is shocked, heartbroken and angry over the murder of an innocent observer by an ICE agent in Minneapolis today. The reckless actions we’ve seen from ICE in Minnesota these last few weeks are striking fear in the hearts of Minnesotans---both immigrants and anyone who dares to dissent---and making communities less safe for workers and families.
We stand in solidarity with committed residents who find the courage every day to protect their immigrant neighbors and coworkers from ICE agents violently trampling our constitutional rights. Our hearts are especially with the victim's family and loved ones.
Contrary to the Department of Homeland Security’s statement, the video clearly shows the victim did not present a threat to the agent’s life. This is not immigration enforcement nor is it law enforcement. This is the kind of behavior we expect from a dangerous and authoritarian regime, not the United States of America.
As a Labor Movement, the first amendment is essential to our mission of bringing economic and social justice to our workplaces, community, state, and nation. Left unchecked, today’s actions pose a dire threat to our precious freedoms.
We are encouraged that Minnesota’s Bureau of Criminal Apprehension will be conducting a full investigation to seek justice for this crime. The Minnesota AFL-CIO joins with our many elected officials in calling for ICE to leave Minnesota – they are making our communities less safe.
We urge all protests to remain nonviolent. The Trump Administration wants to provoke Minnesotans and escalate the situation. Do not give them the opportunity.
