Visible changes and progress are taking shape at George Floyd Square.
Crews have completed several major areas of work. This work is progressing ahead of schedule, with Phase I construction now anticipated to wrap up in October.
Completed work includes the removal and relocation of:
• Overhead power lines
• Pavement and old streetcar rails
• Hydrants
• Abandoned gas lines
Crews have also completed sewer improvements and begun pouring new sidewalks. This work includes accessible pedestrian ramps, trees and green space, stormwater improvements, traffic-calming features, bikeways, lighting and restored transit service.
This fall, city City plans to host a focus group to gather community feedback on the design of the closures for the northern leg of Chicago Avenue. The selected mechanism will allow for temporary street closures for gatherings, events and celebrations. More information will be shared as details become available.
Community members are invited to stop by the City’s new dedicated space at 3736 Chicago Avenue to ask questions, learn about upcoming work and connect with the project team.
• Tuesdays: 8 - 10 a.m.
• Thursdays: Noon - 2 p.m.
If you can't make it in person, join our weekly virtual stakeholder meetings to hear construction updates and ask questions.
• Every Wednesday: 10–11 a.m.
• Location: Microsoft Teams
Phase I construction began without needing to move the central fist and garden. The artist and caretakers moved the east and south fists to other locations to accommodate construction.
Special assessments are a standard part of how the City funds capital improvement projects and are required under the City's established assessment policy. On June 11, the Minneapolis City Council voted to deny special assessments for the 38th Street and Chicago Avenue reconstruction project. Council members made the exception, citing the unique circumstances of this project.
Public Works will use other available funds to cover the cost. These funds are dedicated to eligible transportation projects and are not being redirected from other City projects.
The restaurants, shops and local businesses remain an important part of the George Floyd Square community and everyday life of this corridor. Access to local businesses is being maintained throughout construction.
