Work begins on Bridge 9

Posted

Bridge No. 9 was constructed in 1922 by the Northern Pacific Railroad to carry freight over the Mississippi. The City of Minneapolis acquired this bridge in 1986 and converted the bridge to a pedestrian use bridge in 1999. The bridge currently provides a Mississippi River crossing for the Dinkytown Greenway bike trail.
Beginning in July 2026, the City of Minneapolis started making repairs and improvements to Bridge 9, Pier four. Construction activities this season started with site fencing being installed on July 10, 2026. Work is expected to take about three months.
Work to be completed in 2026 is concentrated at Pier 4, the substructural element in the middle of the Mississippi River. Crews will install micropiles to support the pier, and will also overlay the pier cap with new concrete. It is anticipated that this work will only take a few months.
The bridge will remain open to people biking and walking, however the space is constrained so people are asked to walk their bikes through the work zone.
Work is anticipated to progress quite rapidly this year. The scaffolding access tower is being installed early August. Removals will then begin as the crews get ready for work within the Caisson.
The largest portion of work for this summer will actually be completed from a barge on the river. Keep an eye open for when that shows up on site, currently expected at the end of the month.
